  Greta Garbo takes on the title role of Anna Karenina in this film, which tells Leo Tolstoy's story about Anna leaving her husband Karenin (Basil Rathbone) and her young son Sergie (Freddie Bartholomew) to be with military officer Count Vronsky (Fredric March). But happiness is elusive, and Anna's tragic tale ends with her suicide.

Rumors fly after the sighting, and the director, needing money, thinks B.G. might help. Meanwhile, a love affair takes place between B.G. and Janet. All ends well. Vera-Ellen's dance routines are a highlight.
