This sequel to "Father of the Bride (1950)" has Stanley Banks (Spencer Tracy) trying to adjust to becoming a grandfather. Stanley's overbearing wife Ellie (Joan Bennett) is worried throughout the pregnancy, but their young grandson arrives safely. The baby now screams whenever Stanley comes near–until Stanley mistakenly leaves the baby alone in his carriage for a half hour. When Stanley returns, he is greeted by a smiling baby, and he is finally a proud grandfather.

This film is an adaptation of John Steinbeck's novel about California migrant workers during the Great Depression. They are hired by rancher Jackson (Oscar O'Shea) but have problems with Jackson's son Curley (Bob Steele). Curley's wife Mae (Betty Field) flirts with Lennie, and, while consoling him over the death of a pet rabbit, Lennie accidentally strangles Mae, which leads to a tragic end.
