William Castle was at his best in this eerie tale, a different take on the "Psycho" theme. A young woman (Joan Marshall) asks a bellhop, who she just met, to marry her, promising it would be annulled. She kills the Justice of the Peace that married them and heads to a creepy house to nurse an old, paralyzed woman and her strange son. The old woman's niece becomes suspicious after her aunt is brutally murdered, and she then finds out that her new boyfriend is the nurse in drag. Wild, gory fun. Director Castle had a "Fright Break" near the end of the film so that those who wanted to could leave.

| | Battle of the Giants | 1fatts 06/16/2009 | The story is that when this movie was being shot, actors on the lot would find their way to the set to just hang out and watch the battle of the giants: Spencer Tracy and Fredric March. It was a good script; no one could direct courtroom like Stanley Kramer; nice casting; great set: but it is, in the end, March and Tracy eating the scenery and creating character.
Other good things deserve to be said about this movie, but it's watching the two actors of their generation pull out the stops that overshadows everything else. |
