He does his investigating at night, posing as Mexican bandit El Capitan in order to solve the murder, which he does, bringing Lafe to justice. Meanwhile, he wins the affections of a rancher's daughter, Mary Lou Moran (Sally Eilers–Hoot Gibson's wife at the time).

This story grew out of rumors involving a hotel guest's death during the 1893 Columbian Exposition in Chicago.

Mr. Wong and Inspector Sam Street (Grant Withers) sort out the evidence, expose the killer, and Mr. Wong returns the gem to China.
