Albuquerque's East High seniors Troy Bolton (Zac Efron) and Gabriella Montez (Vanessa Anne Hudgens) are facing graduation. Troy, as captain of the Wildcat basketball team, has won another championship and cannot decide between going on with basketball or choosing a theater career. Gabriella has decided to accept an early admission to Stanford, which will mean a separation from Troy. In the midst of their changing lives, Troy and Gabriella join the other Wildcats in staging a Spring musical that will reflect what is going on in their lives as they reach the end of high school and plan for the future.
