Boston architect Newton Davis (Steve Martin) builds a dream home for Becky (Dana Delany), but she turns him down when he proposes marriage to her. Newton meets Gwen (Goldie Hawn) who suggests that they move into the house together and pretend to be married. The idea sounds good to Newton who goes along with the idea as the means to make Becky jealous. The lies begin to multiply until even the neighbors are brought into the scheme.
