Salt of the Earth   1954     3 stars    N/R, 94 min.
Genre: Drama
Director: Herbert J. Biberman
Cast: Rosaura Revueltas, Will Geer, David Wolfe, Mervin Williams, David Sarvis, Juan Chacon, Henrietta Williams, Ernesto Velazquez, Angela Sanchez, Charles Coleman, E.A. Rockwell, William Rockwell, Clorinda Alderette, Virginia Jencks, Clinton Jencks

Although branded as "Communist propaganda" when it was first released in the U.S., this film was acclaimed in Europe. In fact, director Biberman had served five months in prison for not cooperating with the House Un-American Activities Committee and wanted to give work to those blacklisted by the entertainment industry. The story revolves around a strike against a New Mexico zinc mine. When the strikers are forced to leave the picket line, their wives take up the cause–standing up not only to mine officials but to their husbands as well.

Slaves   1969     1 star    N/R, 110 min.
Genre: Drama
Director: Herbert J. Biberman
Cast: Ossie Davis, Stephen Boyd, Nancy Coleman, David Huddleston, Shepperd Strudwick, Gale Sondergaard, Dionne Warwick, Julius Harris, Marilyn Clark, Eva Jessye, Robert Kya-Hill

Luke (Ossie Davis) suffers at the hands of a cruel plantation owner, McKay (Stephen Boyd), in this very out-dated film about racial relationships. Highlight: Gale Sondergaard returns to films after 20 years, having been blacklisted for her political views in the late 1940s.
