Nina (Shirley Jean Rickert) is a half-Indian child who has inherited land that contains oil. Her guardian, Chris Morrell (John Wayne), tries to contact Nina's long-lost father Tom (Earl Dwire) because she needs his signature before collecting the oil lease. Meanwhile, Sam Black (Yakima Canutt) and his gang will stop at nothing to get their hands on Nina's inheritance. Chris does find Tom, and with cowhand Matt Downing (George "Gabby" Hayes), they fight Black and his gang in a final confrontation in the Snake River.

The express office has been robbed, and Randy (John Wayne) rides into the town of Peyote Pass where he finds a saloon filled with dead bodies. Randy is falsely accused of the murders and is taken to jail. The saloon owner's niece, Sally Rogers (Alberta Vaughn), helps Randy escape so that he can find the real culprits. Randy finds the killers hiding in a cave with their leader Marvin Black (George "Gabby" Hayes) who poses as Peyote Pass shop-keeper Matt the Mute while plotting to take control of the town. Randy joins the gang members as part of his plan to bring them to justice.
