On a car trip to California, Jim (C. Thomas Howell) picks up psychotic hitchhiker John Ryder (Rutger Hauer), and, from that point on, his excursion turns into a nightmare. John is a serial killer, and he leaves corpses of victims in their cars for Jim to discover, and Jim is framed as the chief suspect in the killings. When Jim meets truck-stop waitress Nash (Jennifer Jason Leigh), the two of them set out, evading the police, to stop John's murder spree and clear Jim's name.
