That ring just happens to be the famous Pink Panther diamond, and Chief Inspector Dreyfus (Kevin Kline) promotes Clousseau to inspector in the quest to find the diamond. Dreyfus then places Gendarme Gilbert Ponton (Jean Reno) on the case with instructions to report back all actions taken by Clousseau–and the search is on.

Jeffries takes the Stranger home, hypnotizes him, and gives him instructions to kill Jeffries' wife Frances (Jill Ireland) and her lover Paul (Henri Garcin). The Stranger, in his hypnotized state, sets off to do the killings, but will Jeffries change the plans before both are killed?
