College professor Miranda Hollander (Helena Mattsson) suffers a blackout and awakens amidst mutilated bodies. To her surprise, he informs Miranda that she is a creation of an ex-colleague, scientist Forbes McGuire (Dominic Keating) who lives in Mexico. Now, Miranda and Tom set off to Mexico to locate her creator and find a cure. But the cure unleashes her extraterrestrial side, Miranda's killer instincts rise to the fore, and now the entire human race is in jeopardy.

In this story, which is set in the future, people are living in the comfort and safety of their homes and communicate with others through robot surrogates. When two surrogates and their owners are killed, FBI agents Greer (Bruce Willis) and Peters (Radha Mitchell) are assigned the case and, in the process, must abandon their surrogate world and venture outside their homes for the first time in years. Clues lead to The Prophet (Ving Rhames) who leads a group of people who have chosen to live their lives together–unlike those in the rest of the world who communicate only through surrogates.
