In this episode of the "Boston Blackie" series, reformed thief Boston Blackie (Chester Morris) helps his former lover Betty Barnaby (Ann Savage) retrieve a sack of diamonds that her father had hidden after a robbery. Betty wants her father, Diamond Ed Barnaby (Walter Baldwin), to change his ways, but he is killed, and now Blackie is arrested for the crime. Of course, Blackie escapes, saves Betty who is kidnapped by those who murdered her father, stops the gang, and returns the jewels to the owners.

Many consider this the best of Charlie Chaplin's comedies. In this film, the Lone Prospector (Chaplin) is prospecting for gold in Alaska and is trapped in a cabin with two mean-looking prospectors, Big Jim McKay (Mack Swain) and Black Larsen (Tom Murray). When they run out of food for Thanksgiving, the Lone Prospector roasts a leather boot for dinner! The weather clears, the Lone Prospector heads off on his own in search of gold and meets saloon girl Georgia (Georgia Hale). He invites Georgia to a New Year's Eve dinner, but she does not appear. Big Jim arrives back in town and joins the Lone Prospector at the cabin. As luck would have it, their cabin is blown by the wind and slides down the mountain–landing on Big Jim's gold strike. Now rich, the Lone Prospector and Big Jim sail back to the U.S. on a frigate. Also on board is Georgia, and, at last, they fall in love.

The celestial Mr. Jordan (Claude Rains) sends Joe's soul back to Earth in the body of Bruce Farnsworth whose wife Julia (Rita Johnson) and her lover Tony (John Emery) have plotted his demise. They do the evil deed, but Joe has taken over Farnsworth's body and leaves the scene. Now, Joe hires his manager Max Corkle (James Gleason) to get him in shape as a prizefighter. Joe meets Betty Logan (Evelyn Keyes) whose father was framed by Farnsworth, falls in love with her, and straightens out Farnsworth's debt to his investors. This inspires Julia and Tony to plot the killing of "Farnsworth" once again. The film received Oscar nominations for Best Picture, Actor, Director, and Supporting Actor (Gleason) and won Oscars for Writing (original story and screenplay).

Effie passes off Ruggles as an upper-class British officer, and he ends up a town celebrity. Later, Ruggles decides to open his own restaurant and gain independence. A fine rendition of Harry Leon Wilson's story that was filmed twice before and made again in 1950 as "Fancy Pants." The film was nominated for an Oscar as Best Picture.
