Hedy is a child bride of an older man who, after being ignored by him on their wedding day, takes off and has sex with another. After that she goes for a nude swim, a horse runs off with her clothes, and the lover retrieves them. The husband ends up committing suicide and she ends up with a child from her affair–and she's content with that.

Billy regularly visits invalid Leslie Odell (June Allyson) who becomes jealous when he tells her about Veronica. Billy and Veronica visit a bar that gets raided, and Veronica is put in jail. Paul does appear to bail her out, and she learns that her father, the king, has died and that she is now the queen. By story's end, Valerie and Paul are a couple, and Jimmy and Leslie have discovered their love for each other.

When Danny inherits two small houses, and the friends move in, Pilon moves away from his plan to steal "the Pirate's" money, and his attention switches to Dolores who he plans to steal away from Danny. But, after Danny is injured in a fight, Pilon changes his tune and helps Danny and Dolores get together. Frank Morgan was nominated for an Oscar (Best Supporting Actor).
