When a patient is near death, an angel, Seth (Nicholas Cage), becomes visible and offers comfort. Seth is visiting a patient in a Los Angeles hospital when the patient dies. Seth meets the surgeon, Dr. Maggie Rice (Meg Ryan), and falls in love with her. Maggie is faced with a dilemma because she is already engaged to Jordan (Colm Feore) but has feelings for Seth who faces his own dilemma of remaining an angel or becoming human to spend the rest of his life with Maggie.
