Bountiful was once a beautiful town, but it no longer exists. Elderly Carrie Watts (Geraldine Page) discovers that fact when she leaves the unhappy home of her son Ludie (John Heard) and his wife Jessie Mae (Carlin Glynn) hoping to find happiness in the town of her youth. On the bus ride to Bountiful, Carrie meets young Thelma (Rebecca De Morney), and they enjoy each other's company. When Carrie reaches Bountiful, she looks beyond its dilapidated state and sees Bountiful as it once was. Now, for the first time in years, Carrie finds peace. Geraldine Page carried away an Oscar for her performance.
