  Misfit patrons of a neighborhood bar have been pinning their hopes on the bartender, Jerry Maxwell (David Morse), who has just been offered a position on a professional basketball team and is leaving the bar. Bar patron Roary (John Savage), who had attempted suicide, learned much from this group and, with help from Jerry and his romance with Louise (Diana Scarwid), gains confidence to help himself. Helping Jerry train just might work to the advantage of Roary and the other bar patrons as well during the transition period. Scarwid was nominated for an Oscar.

Louis Gossett Jr. takes on the role of the drill sergeant who turns boys into men, and Debra Winger plays Gere's love interest, the town girl with her own dreams of improving her station in life. An Oscar was presented to Gossett for his supporting role, and the song "Up Where We Belong" also won. Debra Winger received a nomination as Best Actress.    1 User Review
