  Alan Bates reprises his Broadway role of English Literature Professor Ben Butley who returns to London University after a vacation weekend. Then, his male lover Joey (Richard O'Callaghan) announces that he has a new boyfriend. The bad news continues with Edna (Jessica Tandy) complaining that Butley has stolen one of her tutorial students, and it goes on and on–making for one VERY BAD day.

  This made-for-TV drama was broadcast in the U.K. in 1978. The story revolves around three unmarried sisters–Imogen (Judi Dench), Helen (Annette Crosbie), and Lily (Susan Williamson)–who live in an old mansion in Ireland. To make ends meet, Imogen had rented out part of the house to graduate student Otto (Jeremy Irons), and a love affair between Imogen and Otto bloomed, then failed. The sisters have been nursing grudges against each other ever since.

She establishes a bond with her cousin, Edmund Bertram (Philip Sarson), and later Fanny (now played by Frances O'Connor) and Edmund (now played by Jonny Lee Miller) fall in love. But love does NOT conquer all in 19th-century England, and when Fanny refuses an arranged marriage to Henry Crawford (Alessandro Nivola), she is sent out on her own.
