Boxing manager Nick Donati (Edward G. Robinson) decides to promote a young bellhop (Wayne Morris) as the next champion. While still training for his prize fight, the bellhop knocks out heavyweight Chuck McGraw (William Haade) after he insults Donati's girlfriend Louise "Fluff" Phillips (Bette Davis), and he is given the name "Kid Galahad." Later, he falls in love with Donati's young sister Marie (Jane Bryan). Their interest in each other angers Donati, and he arranges a fight that he is sure "Kid Galahad" will lose. But, will "Kid Galahad" come through and live up to his reputation as a winner? Remade in 1941 as "The Wagons Roll at Night" and in 1962 as "Kid Galahad."

Dr. Niles Nelson (John Eldridge) has been hired as the doctor for Joe Gurney (Humphrey Bogart) and his gangsters. When police raid Joe's hideout, Joe kills Niles and sets it up so that Niles' wife Carol (Kay Francis), who is also a doctor, is accused of the murder. Carol is acquitted, searches for Joe, and moves to a small town where Joe's gangsters are jailed. She meets Bill Stevens (James Stephenson) who Joe has hired to write his biography and convinces him not to write the story. Meanwhile, Joe is wounded while breaking the two gangsters out of jail and asks Carol to treat him. Carol treats Joe and his gangsters with eye drops that blind them and then calls the police.
