  According to French legend, in the year 1765 trouble brewed in the form of a beast that killed humans in the mountains of France. Two brave men–one, enlightened Parisian Fronsac (Samuel Le Bihan), and the other, wise native American Iroquois Mani (Mark Dacascos)–are sent by King Louis XV to investigate the uncivilized, backward Gevaudan province, which is far removed from Paris society.

  There's a new AIDS-like disease out there in the future, and it attacks only those who make love without feeling love. There is also a cure, but the serum is locked away, and a woman, known as "The American" (Carroll Brooks) hires thieves Hans (Hans Meyer) and Marc (Michel Piccoli) to steal it. They recruit teenage Alex (Denis Lavant) to steal the serum, and while preparing for the theft, Alex leaves his girlfriend Lise (Julie Delpy) and moves in with Marc. Alex falls for Marc's girlfriend Anna (Juliette Binoche), but she stays faithful to Marc. Now it is time for the theft, and the pace steps up with double crosses awaiting Alex–and also a daring rescue.
