This is an excellent story of the trials and tribulations of Swedish emigrants Kristina and Karl-Oskar (Liv Ullmann and Max von Sydow). After one of their children starves to death, they leave their famine-ravaged native home in Sweden and come to America in the 1850s, searching for a better life. They travel by steamer, train, and on foot with other emigrants to find a new home on the fertile land of Minnesota. The film received Academy Award nominations as Best Foreign Film, Picture, Actress (Ullmann), Director, and Writing.
