Emilie remarries, and she and the children move into the austere home of her new husband, Bishop Vergerus (Jan Malmsjo). Lacking the comforts that Fanny and Alexander had known, the children are very unhappy–until their grandmother (Gunn Wallgren) takes them into her home and showers them with affection. Now, at last, the children find refuge. This film won four Academy Awards, including Best Foreign Film. Ingmar Bergman was also nominated for Best Director.

The Crusades have left Antonius cynical about the existence of God, and he challenges Death to a game of chess to gain time before passing on. Sweden is engulfed in a plague, and, with turmoil surrounding them, Death and Antonius discuss whether or not there is a God as they play the chess game.

  Jan (Max von Sydow) and Eva Rosenberg (Liv Ullmann) are a middle-class couple who flee the perils of war as their civilized society crumbles. Both are former concert violinists but now settle on an island off the coast of their country where they work on their island farm selling lingonberries. Invasion is imminent. After a military plane crashes on their island, soldiers land, and the war is in their backyard. Eva and Jan are arrested, but Col. Jacobi (Gunnar Bjorstrand) offers to have them released if Eva will have sex with him. Eva obliges, but more traumas and shame follow until Eva and Jan leave their home hoping for shelter on another island nearby.

Then, a teenager Sara (also played by Andersson) asks for a ride, and she joins Isak and Marianne along with a crotchety couple. Through his new acquaintances, Isak reflects on his own disappointments in life. A Bergman classic.
