  This is Leon Uris's story about the settling of a new Israel following World War II. In this well-produced historical film, Ari (Paul Newman) is a leader of the Jewish underground Hagannah. He commandeers a ship to bring 600 Jews into the newly partitioned Palestine just before the United Nations votes to make Palestine a Jewish state. Ari achieves victory, and now 30,000 more Jews relocate into the Holy Land. Sal Mineo received an Oscar nomination for Best Supporting Actor. One other nomination was received, and the film won an Oscar for Best Cinematography.
