Keanu Reeves plays a World War II veteran, Paul Sutton, who poses as the husband of unwed, pregnant Victoria (Aitana Sanchez-Gijon). Victoria's father is Mexican-American winegrower Alberto Albertini (Giancarlo Giannini) who does not trust Paul even though her grandfather Don Pedro (Anthony Quinn) accepts him. Paul believes that if he sticks around for a few days and then leaves, he will be the bad one, and Alberto will vent his wrath on him instead of Victoria.
