The demon spirit–Azazel–of an executed killer is the focus of Detective John Hobbes (Denzel Washington) after he had captured and prosecuted the killer. Hobbes and his partner Jonesy (John Goodman) believe that Azazel possesses one person after another, and after Hobbes kills a man possessed by Azazel, he becomes suspect. He gets advice from theology professor Gretta Milano (Embeth Davidtz) whose father had been killed by Azazel and gets drawn into the occult as he continues his search for the truth to save his family and others from the demon spirit.
