Horrigan had not been able to forget the assassination of Kennedy, and when Leary threatens to kill the current President (Jim Curley), Harrigan takes the threat seriously and sees this as a chance to redeem himself after his failure to protect Kennedy. A cat-and-mouse game ensues. Malkovich received an Oscar nomination for Best Supporting Actor.
