This is the story of the first man to run a mile in under four minutes: Roger Bannister (Jamie MacLachlan). Roger was one of Great Britain's top runners, but he considered running as a sideline to his medical studies at Oxford. However, he came to realize how important it was for Great Britain to have a hero after World War II when he failed to win a medal in the 1952 Olympics. Thus, he began a rigorous, scientific training program to be the first man to run a mile in under four minutes with tough Archie Mason (Christopher Plummer) as his trainer.
