D.C. is allowed into the home used by bank robbers Iggy and Dan (Frank Gorshin and Neville Brand) who are holding bank teller Margaret Miller (Grayson Hall) hostage. Margaret etches the word "Help" on her watch and then attaches it to D.C.'s neck. When D.C. arrives home to his owners Patti and Ingrid Randall (Hayley Mills and Dorothy Provine), Patti discovers the watch and calls the F.B.I. When agent Zeke (Dean Jones) arrives at their home, they decide to tail D.C., believing that he will lead them to the robbers and hostage Margaret. Zeke, Patti, neighbors, and friends join in the hunt and provide good slapstick comedy along the way.
