  Down-on-his-luck boxer Jerry Moore (Robert Armstrong) is befriended by nightclub entertainer Fannie Field (Fanny Brice) who, with help from her brother Harry (Harry Green), turns Jerry into a prizefighter. But, in the process, Fannie's rival Lillian (Gertrude Astor) steals Jerry from her. Fannie solves the problem by setting up a rematch in which she tells Jerry's opponent (G. Pat Collins) to attack Jerry's newly straightened nose. The ploy works, Jerry loses the fight but realizes how important it is to win Fannie.

  As the country heads for the Great Depression in 1929, Tom and Ruth Holmes (Richard Barthelmess and Loretta Young) manage to cope with Tom's morphine addiction that he got while recuperating from an injury suffered during World War I. Tom is treated and released from an asylum and finds work at a laundry. He becomes friends with Max Brinker (Robert Barrat) who has invented a washing machine, and they form a partnership. Later, the machines put Tom and his coworkers out of business, which results in a riot during which Ruth is killed. By story's end, Tom has donated his fortune from the washing machine business to Mary (Aline MacMahon) so that she can feed the hungry during the Depression, and Tom is out roaming the streets looking for a job.

  This unusual story involves ex-gangster Richard 'Patsy' Gargan (James Cagney) who is appointed Deputy Commissioner of a reform school. He takes the position after the nurse (Madge Evans) at the school confides in him about the inhumane treatment being inflicted on the boys. He works to improve conditions at the reform school and the way the kids are being treated. But, Gargan leaves the reform school to kill a rival gangster, and then he goes into hiding. Meanwhile the poor conditions return at the reform school, and when the boys learn that Gargan is really a ruthless mobster they lose faith in him. But, Gargan returns, gets the warden Mr. Thompson (Dudley Digges) kicked out, and regains the boys' respect.

Now, Al's girlfriend Allison (Alice White) falls for Danny, but he falls in love with Patricia (Patricia Ellis) who happens to be the daughter of police Lt. Casey Nolan (Robert Emmett O'Connor) who had put him in jail. Danny continues to get unique pictures, including one of a woman dying in the electric chair that was facilitated by Casey. Problems develop when one of Danny's former gang members (Ralf Harolde) enters the scene, but Danny manages to save the day. Fast paced and has its funny moments.

  In this great gangster film, mobster Cody Jarrett (James Cagney) is psychologically dependent on his evil mother (Margaret Wycherly). Nevertheless, he is determined to make it to "the top of the world, Ma." So, Cody and his gang rob a train, kill people, and make off with the loot. But, they leave clues behind, and Cody ends up in jail on a trumped up charge. Now, the feds send an undercover agent Hank Fallon, a.k.a. "Vic" (Edmund O'Brien), to the jail. He befriends Cody and infiltrates Cody's gang. Cody's mother is killed, Cody breaks out of jail with "Vic," and reunites with his gang for a chase scene through a chemical factory ending with Cody crying out to his deceased mother.
