Emil Jannings won the first Best Actor Academy Award for his portrayal as a bank teller who was mugged and presumed dead. The Oscar was for his work not only in this film but also for "The Last Command" (1928). (In the first years of the Academy Awards, they were presented for a two-year period.) This story was remade in 1940.
