Gordon McLeod - Movies

The First of the Few   1942     3 stars    N/R, 90 min.
Genre: Drama
aka: Spitfire

Director: Leslie Howard
Cast: Leslie Howard, David Niven, Rosamund John, Roland Culver, Anne Firth, David Horne, J.H. Roberts, Derrick DeMarney, Rosalyn Boulter, Gordon McLeod

This is a good biography of R.J. Mitchell (Leslie Howard), the developer of the highly successful World War II airplane (Spitfire) that contributed much by fending off the air attacks on Great Britain. Naturally, World War II propaganda runs high. Great musical score. (Leslie Howard's plane was shot down by German planes while on his way home from a diplomatic mission shortly after completion of this film.)

The Saint Meets the Tiger   1943     1 and a half stars    N/R, 70 min.
Genre: Mystery
Director: Paul L. Stein
Cast: Hugh Sinclair, Jean Gillie, Gordon McLeod, Clifford Evans, Wylie Watson, Charles Victor, Louise Hampton, John Salew, Amy Veness, Dennis Arundell

It's been two years since the last episode of the Saint's adventures, and this entry is the weakest of the lot (in the view of this reviewer). The dying words of a murdered man on the Saint's doorstep sends our suave detective off to chase down a gold mine scheme of "The Tiger" and his gang. More murders occur before the Saint wraps this one up.

Genre: Mystery
Director: Leslie Fenton
Cast: Hugh Sinclair, Sally Gray, Arthur Macrae, Cecil Parker, Leueen MacGrath, Gordon McLeod, John Warwick, Ivor Barnard, Manning Whiley, Felix Aylmer

Hugh Sinclair takes on the role of the Saint, and Leslie Charteris, the author of the original Saint novels, co-writes this not-bad entry. The Saint and his buddy Monty Hayward (Arthur Macrae) are on vacation in Switzerland when they get involved with a music box containing a secret code. Murder and international intrigue follow as the suave Saint gets on the trail.
