  A cattle man, Wade Hatton (Errol Flynn), arrives in Dodge City in 1872 and is appointed sheriff. He tries to tame Dodge City and must diminish the influences of outlaw, saloon owner Jeff Surrett (Bruce Cabot) to obtain legitimacy for business interests and citizens in the town. Hatton manages to clean up Dodge City, and, in the process, wins the heart of Abbie Irving (Olivia de Havilland).

The mother, Harriet (Lynn Bari), wants to move the family to a mansion and tells her daughter Millicent (Piper Laurie) that she should break up with her boyfriend Dan (Rock Hudson) and find a wealthy man. They run into problems along the way, but, by story's end, lessons are learned, and the family regains its senses and returns to its old lifestyle. Playing a customer at the drug store, James Dean makes his first film appearance.

Oscars also went to Joseph Schildkraut for Best Supporting Actor and to Norman Raine for Best Screenplay. There were seven other nominations, including Best Actor (Muni) and Director.
