  This remake of the 1925 movie is the first talkie version of this story. Claude Rains does a good job as the masked Phantom who comes up from the sewers under the Paris Opera House to coach singer Christine (Susanna Foster). He terrorizes the singers and even drugs and strangles the lead singer (Jane Farrar) to ensure that Christine will be given the lead. When Christine fails to appear on the stage, the Phantom causes a giant chandelier to crash on the audience. Now, the Phantom kidnaps Christine who does manage to remove his mask. More terror ensues during the dark chase beneath the opera house to rescue Christine.

  This was the first time Spencer Tracy and Katharine Hepburn appeared together on the screen. They play sports columnist Sam (Tracy) and political reporter Tess (Hepburn) who carry on a feud through their columns. They finally meet when their editor Clayton (Reginald Owen) introduces them to try to make peace. They seem to have nothing in common–except love–but they marry. The marriage is filled with problems, and after Tess is named "Woman of the Year," Sam walks out. Now, Tess tries to mend her ways in order to win Sam back. Hepburn was nominated for an Oscar, and an Oscar was won for Best Original Screenplay.
