  Soft-hearted Lou Henry (Lou Costello) owns an amusement park and has adopted two children, Shelley (Gigi Perreau) and Duffer (Rusty Hamer). He also has provided chronic gambler Bud Flick (Bud Abbott) with a safe haven. When Lou tries to help bail Bud out of the gambling debts he owes the mob, Lou finds himself the prime suspect in a gang slaying. Watch for the big chase scene through the amusement park in this, Abbott and Costello's final film together.

The mother, Harriet (Lynn Bari), wants to move the family to a mansion and tells her daughter Millicent (Piper Laurie) that she should break up with her boyfriend Dan (Rock Hudson) and find a wealthy man. They run into problems along the way, but, by story's end, lessons are learned, and the family regains its senses and returns to its old lifestyle. Playing a customer at the drug store, James Dean makes his first film appearance.

To pay for expenses, she gets a job as aide to wealthy Annie Call (Beulah Bondi) and later rescues her from her conniving niece Suzanne Rock (Julia Meade) who has Tammy arrested for supposedly stealing a necklace and tries to get Annie institutionalized for mental incompetence. When Tammy goes before Judge Carver (Edgar Buchanan), he believes her story, and she and Annie are cleared of charges. Despite all of her problems, Tammy manages to find time to fall in love with her speech professor, Tom Freeman (John Gavin). The new theme song "Tammy Tell Me True" is introduced in this film.
