His daughter-in-law Marianne (Ingrid Thulin) accompanies him, and they stop along the way at Isak's childhood home. Through flashbacks, Isak remembers his girlfriend Sara (Bibi Andersson). Then, a teenager Sara (also played by Andersson) asks for a ride, and she joins Isak and Marianne along with a crotchety couple. Through his new acquaintances, Isak reflects on his own disappointments in life. A Bergman classic.
