In Argentina during 1945, Elvira's (Leonor Watling) husband, Julio (Ernesto Alterio), is imprisoned for political reasons, and her father has been killed by Franco's army. When Elvira needs money, she takes the job of maid to wealthy magnate Pablo (Leonardo Sbaraglia) who, it turns out, is aiding Nazi party members to escape. Elvira hates fascism but is drawn into an affair with Pablo, which lasts until Julio is released from prison and returns to Elvira. A rough road lies ahead for all concerned.

Calisto (Juan Diego Botto) has fallen in love with Melibea (Penelope Cruz) and gets advice from his servants who suggest that Calisto use a sorceress, Celestina (Terele Pavez), to help him woo Melibea. Celestina does convince Melibea of Calisto's love, and Calisto awards her for her work. Now, the servants are jealous and kill Celestina, but it is Calisto who is blamed for the murder.
