He is pursued by bounty hunters and U.S. cavalry soldiers, led by Terrill (Bill McKinney) and Fletcher (John Vernon). Along his trek, Josey gains traveling companions Cherokee Lone Watie (Chief Dan George), Laura Lee (Sondra Locke), and her Grandma Sarah (Pauls Trueman) who offers Josey a home in her farmhouse. Just when it looks like Josey will settle down, Terrill appears on the scene.
