  While sailing from London to Algiers, Sherlock Holmes (Basil Rathbone) and Dr. Watson (Nigel Bruce) protect a prince, Far Eastern regent Nikolas (Leslie Vincent), on his trip home following his father's assassination. Nikolas is disguised as Watson's son in an effort to confuse possible assassins who are on Nikolas' trail. As luck would have it, the assassins are among the passengers, and Holmes must weed out the good passengers from the bad.

Residents tell Holmes that a legendary monster haunts the area, and they believe that the monster has been killing their neighbors. But, Holmes suspects that the killer is an actor, Potts (Gerald Hamer), who is a master of disguises, and Holmes sets a trap to identify the killer. One of Rathbone's and Bruce's very best.

  A gambler, John "Lucky" Garnett (Fred Astaire), arrives late and misses his wedding to Margaret (Betty Furness). Now he must prove that he is worthy of marrying her in the future. He goes to New York where he has an on-again, off-again romance with dance instructor Penelope "Penny" Carroll (Ginger Rogers). By story's end, Penny escapes her own wedding to Ricky (Georges Metaxa), and "Lucky" and Penny are reunited. Jerome Kern wrote the score, which includes "The Way You Look Tonight" and "Never Gonna Dance." The first of these won the Oscar for Best Song. One of the pair's best.
