  During the last days of World War II, U.S. Army Col. Devlin (Gary Merrill) orders Lt. Rennick (Richard Basehart) to take German P.O.W. Karl "Happy" Maurer (Oskar Werner) behind enemy lines to spy on the movement of a German armored unit. Physical as well as psychological dangers ensue. The film received an Academy Award nomination for Best Picture.
