  When chauvinistic Professor Timothy Sterling (Ray Milland) and independent-minded author June Cameron (Loretta Young) are mistaken for husband and wife, June's publisher boyfriend, John (Reginald Gardiner), believes that she can write a book about marriage and make money–if she pretends to be married to Timothy. Timothy and June rent an apartment, and, at first, they cannot stand each other. But, they go along with the ruse, which results in them falling in love for real.

  A gambler, John "Lucky" Garnett (Fred Astaire), arrives late and misses his wedding to Margaret (Betty Furness). Now he must prove that he is worthy of marrying her in the future. He goes to New York where he has an on-again, off-again romance with dance instructor Penelope "Penny" Carroll (Ginger Rogers). By story's end, Penny escapes her own wedding to Ricky (Georges Metaxa), and "Lucky" and Penny are reunited. Jerome Kern wrote the score, which includes "The Way You Look Tonight" and "Never Gonna Dance." The first of these won the Oscar for Best Song. One of the pair's best.
