Trapped and demoralized, the men do manage to work together to defend their position. Academy Award nominations included Best Picture, Director (William A. Wellman), and Supporting Actor (James Whitmore, for his role as the battle-scarred sergeant, Kinnie). It won for Best Writing and Cinematography.

The production company is out of money and must put on the show within the next few days to take care of debts. It turns out that Glen can sing, and, reluctantly, he steps into the leading role to save the show. Of course, the show is a hit, and Glen also gets the girl, Christine (Gloria DeHaven).
