The Sheik 1921 N/R, 80 min. Genre: Adventure
Director: George Melford Cast: Rudolph Valentino, Agnes Ayres, Adolphe Menjou, Walter Long, Lucien Littlefield, George Waggner, Patsy Ruth Miller, Frank Butler, Charles Brinley, Loretta Young
This film made Valentino a household word, though the film itself is not all that good. By today's standards, race and gender issues would stand out in the manner they are portrayed. But, it is still a fun film to watch. Sheik Ahmed (Rudolph Valentino) falls for a British socialite (Agnes Ayres), abducts her, and takes her to his desert tent. There he teaches her subservience. While trying to escape, she is captured by a foe of the Sheik. When Ahmed saves her, she realizes her love for him.
