To the consternation of her parents (George Mangos and Julie Hamilton), Ruth (Kate Winslet) appears to have fallen under the mystical spell of a guru during her stay in India. A friend advises them to hire an "exit counselor" and trick Ruth into returning to Sydney, Australia. The counselor, PJ Waters (Harvey Keitel), whisks Ruth off to an isolated cottage in the outback where he plans to recondition her.
