In 1928, single-mom Christine's (Angelina Jolie) nine-year-old son Walter (Gattlin Griffith) goes missing, and the LAPD steps in to solve the mystery. Months later, the LAPD claims to have solved the case and delivers a young boy, who says he is Walter, to Christine. Although Christine knows the boy is not her son, she takes him into her home. Finding an ally in activist radio preacher Reverend Briegleb (John Malkovich), Christine then presses police Captain Jones (Jeffrey Donovan) to keep looking for Walter. But, in the 1920s, women do not take on the police, and Christine is slandered and depicted as being an unfit mother. The film received three Academy Award nominations including a Best Actress nomination forAngelina Jolie.

Young Ethan (Cody Arens) enters a Los Angeles antiques shop run by Jack (Robert Forster) and is zapped by something emanating from an old Korean Chest. It turns out that Ethan has absorbed the spirit of a warrior from 500 years ago who had saved his beloved from the monstrous Buraki–Serpents and Dragons that devastated the land. Jack presents a pendant that has powers and tells Ethan to seek out the modern-day incarnation of the warrior's lover, which, after she reaches age 20, they will be able to call up Imoogi dragons to take on the Buraki. Later, Ethan (now played by Jason Behr) does meet up with the woman, Sarah (Amanda Brooks). And yes, the Buraki are released on Los Angeles, wreaking havoc, and yes, the Ethan/Sarah duo take on the monsters via the Imoogi.
