Count Dracula (Christopher Lee) and his son Ferdinand (Bernard Menez) differ on the subject of vampires because Ferdinand becomes squeamish at the sight of blood. Now, the Communists take over the family's Transylvania castle, and they are banished from Romania. The Count and Ferdinand go their separate ways until they reunite in Paris where they meet beautiful Nicole (Marie-Helene Breillat), and both fall in love with her. Nicole chooses Ferdinand and accidentally exposes the Count to sunlight, which makes him disappear. A few years later, Nicole and Ferdinand have married and have two children. While playing, the daughter cuts her knee, causing the son to sprout fangs–and the family spirit continues.

Although engaged to be married, when she finds out that Louis is dying, Nora decides to ask ex-husband Ismael (Matthieu Amalric) to adopt Elias–whose own father died before he was born–so that Elias will not be alone if she dies. But Ismael is holed up in a mental hospital. The story cuts between Nora and Ismael and their past and present dilemmas as they try to put together a plan for the future.
