It doesn't take long for Maurice to suffer from Eve's vanity, and he leaves her with hopes of finding love with his faithful, unadorned secretary Anne (Helen Mack), but she has married Marcel. By story's end, Anne has learned that Marcel is also self-absorbed, and she looks for love with Maurice.

Lots of music in this good remake of 1924's "The Marriage Circle," also directed by Ernst Lubitsch. The film received a Best Picture Oscar nomination.

Gabrielle tells Alan that she is unhappy and wants to go to France to see her mother and write poetry. Now, Duke Mantee (Humphrey Bogart) and his gang invade the cafe and hold them all captive. Alan wants them to kill him so that the Gabrielle can journey to France on the insurance money–and he dies in Gabrielle's arms.

Equestrian Shelby Barret (Barbara Stanwyck) works at wealthy widow "Nicko" Nicholas' (Genevieve Tobin) stables and becomes involved with polo player Johnny Wyatt (Gene Raymond). This incurs the wrath of Nicko who wants Johnny for herself. Meanwhile, wealthy yachtsman Gene Fairchild (John Eldredge) falls in love with Shelby. But, Shelby and Johnny elope and are finding happiness. When Johnny is away, Gene asks Shelby to help him entertain a client aboard his yacht, and Shelby agrees. After the client falls overboard and drowns, Gene is tried for the murder but is saved when Shelby arrives as the "woman in red" and testifies in Gene's defense. Gene is acquitted, and Johnny and his family stand by Shelby.
