| | A tribute to Jackie Gleason | 1fatts 03/14/2007 | I have not seen the film in forty years, and my memory of it is no doubt flawed.
Perhaps if I saw it now, as a more expreinced, far more aged man, I might find the plot forced and the acting hammy. I certainly remember that there was maore slapstick for slapstick's sake than I thought called for, even way back then.
But Jackie Gleason broke my heart. The scene of the mute trying to explain God to the little girl is still somewhere in my mind as a kind of icon of decency, frustrated in its inability to communicate.
I grew up with the Jackie Gleason Show, and his work in The Hustler and Requiem for a Heavyweight demonstrated how fine a seriious actor lay beneath the surface of Ralph Kramden and the Poor Soul. Gigot is not a great film, but it is memorable for Gleason's work. And as his "silent film", it is unique. |

| | Battle of the Giants | 1fatts 06/16/2009 | The story is that when this movie was being shot, actors on the lot would find their way to the set to just hang out and watch the battle of the giants: Spencer Tracy and Fredric March. It was a good script; no one could direct courtroom like Stanley Kramer; nice casting; great set: but it is, in the end, March and Tracy eating the scenery and creating character.
Other good things deserve to be said about this movie, but it's watching the two actors of their generation pull out the stops that overshadows everything else. |

| | As Good as it Gets | 1fatts 07/22/2007 | The script is funny. The music is great. The Gene Kelly/Donald O'Connor dancing duets are magic. Debbie Reynolds looks younger than Princess Leia ever did. Jean Hagen steals every scene she is in -- Steals it? She picks it up, tucks it under her arm and carries it away.
Best Line: "I make more money than Calvin Coolidge . . . put together!"
Favorite Trivia: At the end of the film, Debbie Reynolds is supposedly dubbing a song which the Jean Hagen character is mouthing because she cannot sing. In reality, in this one song in the film, Debbie Reynolds is being dubbed by . . . Jean Hagen!
This one is on everyone's list of top ten musicals ever made. But if you know anything about movies, you already know that. |

| | lover of musicals 07/10/2007 | | If you like musicals, this is a must. Gene Kelly and July Garland do very well together in this show. They are both naturals. Two of my favorites as a young girl. A little slapstick with Eddie Bracken, and Phil Slivers, not to mention the Gloria DeHaven and Marjorie Main. I have this as a VHS and a DVD. Keeps me busy as age keeps creeping up on me. We need more of this type of beauty and laughter in todays world. |
