  Their 12-year-old son is murdered, and, finding it hard to cope with the tragedy, Macon (William Hurt) and his wife Sarah (Kathleen Turner) separate. The dead son's Welsh corgi has discipline problems, and Macon hires dog trainer Muriel (Geena Davis) to solve the problem. Now, Macon and Muriel start a relationship, but when Sara realizes what is happening, she wants to get back together with Macon, and problems lie ahead. Davis won the Best Supporting Actress Oscar. The film also received three Academy Award nominations including Best Picture.

  The thrill of piracy on the high seas is brought to the screen in this film about beautiful Morgan Adams (Geena Davis) who is the daughter of a pirate. When her father dies, Morgan inherits her father's ship and sets out–as the ship's captain–to find pieces of a missing treasure map and to avenge her father's murder. Because the map is printed in Latin, Morgan joins forces with a well-educated slave, William Shaw (Matthew Modine), who can interpret the map. It isn't long before Morgan discovers that her nasty uncle, Dawg Brown (Frank Langella), is also searching for pieces of the map, and a battle ensues with lots of sword-fighting action.

  During World War II, the All-American Girls' Professional Baseball League was formed to make up for the dearth of men playing the sport. Other players who also make the team include Mae Mordabito (Madonna), Doris Murphy (Rosie O'Donnell), and Marla Hooch (Megan Cavanagh). The team's owner (Garry Marshall) picks ex-baseball star Jimmy Dugan (Tom Hanks), who ruined his career with alcoholism, as the manager. Training begins, Dugan stops drinking, and the underdog team works hard and gains success.

The show that Michael works on becomes a hit, and he reaches celebrity status in the guise of a woman. But, complications ensue when Michael's relationship with his girlfriend Sandy (Teri Garr) fails, and Michael falls for his co-star Julie (Jessica Lange) who believes that Michael/Dorothy is a woman and, in turn, tries to fix Michael up with her widowed father, Les (Charles Durning). An Oscar for Best Supporting Actress went to Jessica Lange.
