For most of his life, leuan Davies (Anthony Hopkins) has managed Professor Blathwaite's (Leslie Phillips) estate. When Blathwaite brings his young second wife Helen (Kate Burton) to the estate, the effect on leuan is disastrous. He has loved Helen from afar, and his frustrations lead to heavy drinking and thoughts of suicide. Family friend Dr. Lloyd (Sawn Grainger) is also in love with Helen, which presents big problems because Blathwaite's daughter Sian (Rhian Morgan) is in love with Lloyd. Hopkins makes his directorial debut in this film adaptation of Chekhov's "Uncle Vanya." With a shift in background from Russian to Welsh, this film still retains the humor and pathos of a dysfunctional family of the 1890s–no matter what country is represented.

This is an enjoyable spoof of Charlie Chan movies as the very funny Zero Mostel plays Inspector Hoku Ichihara who tries to protect a "special" robot from foreign efforts to capture it. Good car/motorcycle chase scene, complete with sidecar.
