It is the 24th century, and the Enterprise is on a mission in space when Captain Jean-Luc Picard (Patrick Stewart) and his crew become involved in a battle between a Borg Cube and Federation ships. The Enterprise destroys the Cube, but part of it escapes. Now, the alien Borgs, led by Borg Queen (Alice Krige), are set to attack Earth. The Enterprise chases the Borgs but end up in a time distortion and are now in the 21st century. The only hope is for warp drive inventor Zefram Cochran (James Cromwell) to make a faster-than-light trip to the stars.

Now, 78-years later, Captain Jean-Luc Picard (Patrick Stewart) and the crew of Enterprise-D rescue Dr. Soran (Malcolm McDowell) who, unknown to Picard, is plotting to destroy the world. When Picard realizes that Soran presents a real danger, he convinces Kirk to leave his comfort zone in purgatory and come to his aid. This is a milestone film in that two generations of starship officers, Kirk and Picard, work together to stop an alien from destroying the universe.

When the warden refuses to let Jimmy out early, the prison-mates spring Jimmy. Meanwhile, rich businessman Spencer (Charles Grodin) leaves his filofax (holding his personal information, money, and mansion keys) at an airport. Yes, Jimmy finds the filofax and starts the search for Spencer to claim the reward that is offered for the return of the filofax. In the process, he ends up assuming Spencer's identity. Low-level fun, but the Cubs in the World Series? Get real.
