  Three stories offer different perspectives on the AIDS crisis. In the first, Lucy Liu takes on the role of black-marketer Jin Ping who jeopardizes a village when she pretends to be a representative of the Provincial Health Office and sanctions an unsanitary drawing of villagers' blood. In the second story, HIV-positive porn star Denys (Shawn Ashmore) uses his own father's blood for required blood tests by his production company. In the final entry, a young nun, Sister Clara (Chloe Sevigny), works with missionaries (Olympia Dukakis and Sandra Oh) and makes personal sacrifices for the good of her village.

  Screenwriter Charlie Kaufman (Nicholas Cage) takes on the project of adapting Susan Orlean's (Meryl Streep) non-fiction book, "The Orchid Thief," into a movie. Orlean's story involves John Laroche's (Chris Cooper) poaching of "ghost orchids" from a Florida Everglades natural preserve. Charlie faces a mid-life crisis when his brother Donald (also played by Cage), who is following in his brother's footsteps as a screenwriter, moves in with him. Donald breezes through the writing of his assigned screenplay. Meanwhile, paranoid Charlie encounters more than a few problems writing his and, in the process, ends up as the subject in his script that tells of his inability to adapt Orlean's book into a film. Cooper won an Oscar for Best Actor in a Supporting Role; three other nominations were received, including Best Actor (Cage) and Actress in a Supporting Role (Streep).

  In Kingdom County, Vermont, during 1932 Quebec Bill Bonhomme (Kris Kristofferson) decides to carry on the family bootlegging business after his family's finances are endangered following a barn fire. Bill teams up with his son Wild Bill (Charlie McDermott), his brother-in-law Henry (Gary Farmer), and hired hand Rat (William Sanderson) to take a job running whiskey across the border from Canada. There is one flaw in the plan: the whiskey they are carrying was first stolen by hijacking criminal Carcajou (Lothaire Bluteau), and he follows in hot pursuit with his black beard and white hair flowing. The foursome puts on monks' apparel and even steals a motorboat and a train in their effort to escape from the smuggler Carcajou who wants to retrieve "his" whiskey.

After discussing the fire with police, his opinion that she was murdered is not popular, and he is beaten later by police officers. His next step is to study his tribe's customs, which leads to performing a ritual in which he contacts his mother's soul hoping for answers to the puzzle.

Now the media, including local journalist Kate Madison (Paula Patton), jumps on the story, and the candidates–Republican incumbent President Andrew Boone (Kelsey Grammer) and Democratic liberal Donald Greenleaf (Dennis Hopper) sweep into town, catering to Bud's every whim in hopes of gaining that one deciding vote.
